It is opened with every charge, mechanically stressed and rarely inspected. Why of all things the charging chamber decides the energy balance.

When troubleshooting an aluminium furnace, the first places you look are the bath line, the hearth and the burner zone. The charging chamber is rarely at the top of the list — yet it is the area that takes the harshest combination of loads: it is opened with every charge, cools down in the process, is brought back up when it closes, and in between the charge material strikes mechanically against the edges. In one project we handed over a completely renewed charging chamber — with around 30 per cent lower energy costs as the result.
A simple test during operation: thermography on the closed charging chamber. If the edges show up warm, the gap is already there — regardless of how the lining looks from the inside.
