What a multi-year lining contract does differently from the one-off order

At a secondary aluminium site in Upper Bavaria we have been responsible for the refractory lining for several years. The difference from a one-off order is greater than the form of contract would suggest — and it lies not in the price, but in what you already know by the second job.

What changes over the years

• The furnace file grows. By the second job it is known how each zone was last lined and how long it lasted. This information replaces guesswork in the choice of material.
• The run-up time disappears. Access, safety briefing, contact people and shutdown logic are all settled. What costs half a day the first time costs nothing the fifth time.
• Service lives become comparable. Only over several cycles on the same plant does it emerge whether a change of material actually achieved anything or whether the difference lay in the way the furnace was operated.
• Planning moves forward. Whoever already knows the date of the next overhaul orders material earlier and books teams earlier — instead of reacting at short notice.
