Combustion chamber fundamentally overhauled and thermally optimised

As part of a planned overhaul in the combustion plant sector, SBS Refractory Service was commissioned with the fundamental overhaul of the combustion chamber of a biomass power plant. After many years of continuous operation the existing refractory lining showed clear signs of wear: cracks in the brickwork, leaking expansion joints and stubborn deposits were considerably impairing the thermal efficiency and operational reliability of the plant.
The side brickwork of the combustion chamber was damaged over a large area by cyclic thermal loads and chemical attack from the flue gases
The existing expansion joints had lost their function and were causing uncontrolled heat losses
Stubborn deposits from the combustion process had to be removed completely in order to ensure a clean bearing surface for the new lining
The work had to be completed within the planned shutdown window in order to keep to the production schedule
The side brickwork was completely renewed and built up with refractory materials matched precisely to the temperature conditions and the flue gas composition of the biomass power plant. New expansion joints were professionally integrated in order to absorb thermal expansion in a controlled manner and prevent cracking in the long term.
The fibre blankets in the thermally critical areas were packed and reset. At the same time, the entire combustion chamber was thoroughly cleaned and all deposits removed in order to restore optimum heat transfer.
The combination of new brickwork, correctly dimensioned expansion joints and cleaned surfaces sustainably improved the thermal efficiency of the combustion chamber and significantly reduced operating costs.
