Relining of a Metal Launder
Small in scale, big in effect — a launder carries molten metal

Initial situation
A metal launder is one of the smaller components in the plant, but it carries molten metal. Faults in its construction show up quickly there: as a thermal bridge at the steel casing, as a detached lining or as melt that does not flow off evenly. SBS Refractory Service completely relined the launder.
Scope of services
- Insulating layer
- Ceramic fibre
- Anchoring
- Refractory castable
- Drying
Project data
The task
The insulating layer beneath the refractory castable must be closed — every open joint becomes a thermal bridge at the steel casing
The lining must hold permanently on the floor and walls, even though it is in constant contact with molten metal
The launder must be aligned so that the melt later flows off evenly
The SBS approach
The insulating layer came first: boards laid butt-jointed, the edge joints packed with ceramic fibre. This leaves no open joint through which heat can reach the steel casing.
The anchors were then set in a grid on the floor and walls. They hold the refractory castable and end at a distance below the future hot face.
Before casting, the casing was checked and aligned with a spirit level. It was then cast, compacted and dried in a controlled way.
