Mechanical demolition – precise, safe and efficient

Ahead of a planned relining, the worn old lining of an industrial furnace had to be removed completely. The extent and thickness of the existing lining made manual demolition uneconomical and time-consuming. SBS Refractory Service therefore opted for mechanical demolition using a specially equipped excavator in order to carry out the work efficiently and safely.
The old lining was heavily caked and firmly bonded to the substrate in many places, which made demolition more difficult
Using the excavator inside the furnace called for the utmost precision so as not to damage the steel shell and load-bearing structures
The demolition material produced had to be removed swiftly so as not to impede the workflow
Safety requirements for mechanical demolition in enclosed spaces are particularly high
Our experienced excavator operator used an excavator specially equipped for furnace demolition to remove the worn lining in a controlled manner, layer by layer. The hydraulic equipment allows precise work even in confined conditions.
In parallel with the demolition, the material produced was removed directly from the furnace chamber via a well-practised logistics system and disposed of properly. This allowed the excavator to work continuously without being hindered by accumulating material.
After the lining had been completely removed, the steel shell was inspected and cleaned to create optimum conditions for the subsequent relining. The entire demolition process was completed safely and without any damage to the furnace structure.
